Maya Angelou was a poet, author, dancer, singer, and civil rights activist. Born Marguerite Johnson on April 4, 1928, in St. Louis, Missouri, she had a difficult childhood, but overcame many challenges to become a successful and influential figure.
Angelou began her career as a dancer and singer. She toured Europe with the opera Porgy and Bess and performed in nightclubs in New York City. In the 1960s, Angelou became involved in the civil rights movement. She worked as a writer and editor for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and traveled to Africa to study the decolonization movement.
She published her first book, an autobiography called I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, in 1969. She tells the story of her traumatic childhood and adolescence. The book became a critical and commercial success, and it helped to make Angelou a household name.
Angelou went on to write several more autobiographies, as well as poetry, essays, and plays. She also worked as a film and television actress, and she served as a professor at several universities.
